Building Excellent Schools (BES) Fellowship is a yearlong, full-time training program that teaches individuals how to plan, establish, and maintain a high-quality urban charter school. The fellowship incorporates 85 days of hands-on training, a residency at a current BES charter school, and ongoing support with board and application development. Fellows are expected to complete their year by submitting a high-quality charter application grounded in best practices for serving  underserved students in an urban environment.

The BES Fellowship is focused on high-priority territories in Colorado, Massachusetts, New York, and Tennessee. However, BES will accept applications from individuals interested in establishing a school in any urban setting nationwide. The 2012–2013 application is now available. Due dates for the fellowship are December 1, 2011, February 15, 2012, and May 1, 2012. Summer fellowships are also available.
