Twice Considered: Charter Schools and Student Achievement in Utah

This report from the National Center for the Study of Privatization in Education examines student achievement and demographics in charter schools in Utah and compares traditional public schools. The report suggest that the performance of charter schools is held back by the “low effectiveness and high student mobility of newly-established charter schools,” but “when charter schools gain more experience they become as effective as traditional public schools, and in some cases more effective than traditional public schools.”

Student Achievement in Massachusetts’ Charter Schools

This 2011 report from the Harvard University Center for Education Policy Research evaluates the impact of charter school attendance on academic achievement in Massachusetts. The report suggests that, as a group, “charter middle schools boost average math scores, but have little effect on average English Language Arts (ELA) scores. The results for high school show strong effects in both subjects.” The report also discusses the differences between urban and nonurban school settings and the practices of schools.

Nonprofit Board Member Recruiting/Matching Program, Fort Wayne, Indiana

The Foellinger Foundation of Fort Wayne, Indiana, granted $40,400 over two years to support Get on Board, a project to connect exemplary veterans of local nonprofit governing boards with young leaders interested in serving in similar capacities. The veterans, a pool of people drawn from nominees for a foundation community board service award, act as mentors and share their knowledge of how to be effective in the role.

Ohio Education Law, Substitute House Bill 525, Cleveland Transformation

This is Ohio’s Substitute House Bill 525, which was signed into law by the governor on July 2, 2012, and is focused on management of public schools in Cleveland. The law provides for the school district to levy property taxes that may be shared with partnering charter schools, changes in the role of teacher performance and seniority in employment decisions, and establishment of the Municipal School District Transformation Alliance to be appointed by the mayor.

Inclusion of Students With Disabilities in School Accountability Systems

This May 2012 interim report from the Institute of Education Sciences covers the extent to which students with disabilities are included in school accountability systems under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. It includes data about charter schools and the influence of students with disabilities subgroups on adequate yearly progress performance. The report is based on data from 2005-2006 to 2008-2009 school years for up to 40 states.
