The 2012 Index of Essential Practices from the National Association of Charter School Authorizers (NACSA) offers guidance for authorizers, and it includes the results of a survey of authorizers’ use of such basic practices as requiring a signed contract with charter schools and establishing renewal criteria.

Federal Guidance on Schools' Obligation to Provide Students with Disabilities Opportunity to Participate in Athletics

This January 25, 2013, guidance from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights clarifies schools' obligations under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act to provide students with disabilities equal opportunity to participate in extracurricular athletic activities.

The guidance provides examples of modifications that schools may be required to make to existing policies, practices, or procedures for students with intellectual, developmental, physical, or any other type of disability.

Washington State Initiative 1240, Ballot Measure Passed November 2012 to Allow Charter Schools

This is Washington State's Initiative 1240, the measure to allow charter schools that voters passed November 6, 2012. The 40-page initiative describes the purpose and obligations of charter schools and how they will be funded and overseen.

This June 8, 2012, order of U.S. Magistrate Judge James M. Ohio Education Law, Substitute House Bill 525, Cleveland Transformation

This is Ohio’s Substitute House Bill 525, which was signed into law by the governor on July 2, 2012, and is focused on management of public schools in Cleveland. The law provides for the school district to levy property taxes that may be shared with partnering charter schools, changes in the role of teacher performance and seniority in employment decisions, and establishment of the Municipal School District Transformation Alliance to be appointed by the mayor.
