Is Administration Leaner in Charter Schools? Resource Allocation in Charter and Traditional Public Schools (Michigan)

This March 2012 study compares resource allocation in charter and district schools in Michigan, finding that charter schools on average spend nearly $800 more per pupil per year on administration and $1,100 less on instruction. Funding patterns for both types of schools nationwide and in the state are reviewed, and the various circumstances that can impact allocations, such as issues of school scale, are discussed in the analysis.

Injecting Successful Charter School Strategies Into Traditional Public Schools: Early Results From an Experiment in Houston

This 2012 report covers the implementation and impact of  strategies from successful charter schools at nine low-performing traditional district schools in Houston, Texas, in the  2010-11 school year. In this complex longitudinal study, the researchers examined student learning outcomes in reading and math in 15 states and the District of Columbia. Massachusetts Charter Schools & Their Feeder Districts: A Demographic Analysis

This 2004 report from The Rennie Center for Education Research & Policy compares the demographic profiles of charter schools in Massachusetts to the districts where they draw students. The study shows that the charter schools serve proportionately more African-American students than their feeder districts and proportionally fewer Hispanic, Asian, low-income, special education, and English language learning students.

Profiles of For-Profit and Nonprofit Education Management Organizations: Thirteenth Annual Report, 2010-2011

This January 2012 report from the National Education Policy Center at the University of Colorado Boulder describes the landscape of educational management companies (EMOs) across the country and their role with charter schools. The number of states where EMOs operate expanded from 2010 to 2011, with 35 percent of all charter schools being operated by an EMO and almost 42 percent of all charter school students attending those schools. Breakdowns by state and EMO size are provided.
