This is the Spring Branch, Texas, Charter-District Collaboration Compact announced in December 2011 as part of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation project to encourage cooperation between charter and district schools. The compact involves the Spring Branch Independent School District, KIPP Houston, and YES Prep Public Schools.

A collaboration between a charter school and the Central Falls School District in Rhode Island that began five years ago has broadened into a formal cooperation compact involving area charter schools and may gain $100,000 in support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The effort began with a small step, according to district Superintendent Frances Gallo. She was visting homes soon after she started her job in 2007, and during one stop the family got a call that their daughter had received a spot in a charter school through the lottery.

This is the September 2011 collaboration compact between the Boston Public Schools and the Boston Alliance of Charter Schools. Signed by the mayor, chair of the city school committee, city schools superintendent and 15 charter school leaders, the document covers a common enrollment calendar, shared professional development, a common accountability system to better enable parents to compare schools, access to facilities, and efforts by charter schools to recruit more from the areas where they are located to reduce public school transportation costs.

This is a compilation of charter-district collaborative practices that were featured at the September 27-28, 2010, national conference in Columbus, Ohio. The publication is available through the Ohio Alliance for Public Charter Schools, which hosted the event.
