Rhode Island District Superintendent Describes Start of Collaboration with Charter Schools

A collaboration between a charter school and the Central Falls School District in Rhode Island that began five years ago has broadened into a formal cooperation compact involving area charter schools and may gain $100,000 in support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The effort began with a small step, according to district Superintendent Frances Gallo. She was visting homes soon after she started her job in 2007, and during one stop the family got a call that their daughter had received a spot in a charter school through the lottery.

Collaboration Compact Between the Boston Public Schools and Boston Alliance of Charter Schools

This is the September 2011 collaboration compact between the Boston Public Schools and the Boston Alliance of Charter Schools. Signed by the mayor, chair of the city school committee, city schools superintendent and 15 charter school leaders, the document covers a common enrollment calendar, shared professional development, a common accountability system to better enable parents to compare schools, access to facilities, and efforts by charter schools to recruit more from the areas where they are located to reduce public school transportation costs.

District-Charter Collaboration Compacts

The National Charter School Resource Center and the U.S. Department of Education hosted a full-day conference in New Orleans on May 12, 2011, titled Transforming Urban Public Education: Exploring the Potential of City-Based Strategies. The presenters explored emerging city-based movements that are embracing high-quality charter schools as an integral component of citywide reform initiatives that are designed to improve the quality of public education for all students.

Baltimore: District-Charter Collaboration Compact

Baltimore was among nine cities across the country where leaders developed agreements to work on collaboration between charter and traditional schools as part of an initiative supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. A draft copy of Baltimore's District-Charter Collaboration Compact was provided to the National Charter School Resource Center by the Baltimore City Public Schools. The agreements were announced in December 2010.
