Helping English Language Learners Meet the New Common Core State Standards: What Do Charter School Educators Need to Know?

This presentation was delivered at the 2012 National Charter Schools Conference in Minneapolis. This informative session was designed to help charter school educators who do not have a great deal of experience with English language learners (ELLs) better understand the characteristics of the ELL population, what the research says about what works for ELLs, and how teachers can provide ELLs with a variety of supports to help them access grade-level academic content.

National Evaluation of Title III Implementation: Report on State and Local Implementation

This May 2012 report was prepared by American Institutes for Research for the U.S. Department of Education as part of a larger evaluation of the Title III program. Title III of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act provides funds to states and districts to support English language learners' (ELLs) successful attainment of English language proficiency and state academic standards.

Educating English Language Learners: Implementing Instructional Practices

The National Council of La Raza published this 2005 guide to support charter school educators. The authors describe the process for identifying English language learners (ELLs), review theories related to second language acquisition and language development, discuss considerations for selecting program models and training staff, and outline a number of instructional strategies that can be used to help ELLs succeed.

Are ELL Students Underrepresented in Charter Schools? Demographic Trends in New York City, 2006-2008

In this 2010 report, the New York University authors analyzed enrollment patterns of student subpopulations in New York City charter schools over three years. They found significant variation among charter schools. On average from 2006-2008, as compared with districtwide averages, English language learners (ELLs) were underrepresented in charter schools, students who qualify for reduced price lunch were overrepresented, and similar percentages of students were eligible for free lunch.

Word Generation

Word Generation is a comprehensive vocabulary program developed by researchers at the Strategic Education Research Partnership in collaboration with educators in Boston Public Schools. By engaging students with high-interest texts about a variety of contemporary controversies, the program helps all students, but particularly English language learners (ELLs), to increase their academic vocabulary and learn how target words are used in a range of settings and within the context of the four core content areas.
