This January 2012 report from the National Education Policy Center at the University of Colorado Boulder describes the landscape of educational management companies (EMOs) across the country and their role with charter schools. The number of states where EMOs operate expanded from 2010 to 2011, with 35 percent of all charter schools being operated by an EMO and almost 42 percent of all charter school students attending those schools. Breakdowns by state and EMO size are provided. The report profiles 99 for-profit and 197 nonprofit EMOs and includes student performance data.
