Governing Boards
As the main entity accountable for governance, fiscal oversight, and strategic planning, among many other responsibilities, charter school boards have a direct impact on the ultimate success or failure of charter schools. After all, the board holds the charter, receives grants and funding, and board members are legally responsible for sound administration and oversight. Yet, little is known about charter school boards: how they work, what is their composition, and how they perform. The mission of the National Charter School Resource Center is to provide access to high-quality resources to help the charter school community understand the role of governing boards, best practices, and available research.
