USDA Rural Facilities Program Provided Direct Loans Totaling $67 Million for Charters in 2012

Charter schools received about $132 million in U.S. Department of Agriculture rural community facilities program low-interest loans and loan guarantees from 2011 to 2012, including direct loans totaling about $67 million in 2012 for 17 projects, according to the agency. The agency provided about $9 in direct loans for five charter projects in 2011.

Idaho to Dedicate Funding for Charter Facilities, Require Authorizer Fees and Performance Contracts

Idaho changed state law in April 2013 to provide dedicated funding for charter school facilities, initiate authorizer fees and require performance contracts.

Under the new law (H206), the state department of education will distribute facilities funding to charter schools based on a percentage of the statewide average for “bond and plant facility funds levied per student by Idaho school districts.”

NACSA Reports Increase in Charter School Closure Rates

The National Association of Charter School Authorizers (NACSA) on April 18, 2013, released its fifth annual review of practices and policies of the organizations that approve and monitor charter schools, reporting that school closure rates increased from 2011 to 2012.

Mississippi Governor Signs Charter School Law

Mississippi has a new charter school law that establishes a single statewide Charter School Authorizer Board to approve up to 15 charter schools annually.
