A panel has recommended that a Chicago, Illinois, charter school network be chosen to develop a K-8 charter school proposed for a site [1] on Naval Station Great Lakes.
LEARN Charter School Network [2], which operates five charter elementary schools in Chicago communities, was recommended to develop the school that is anticipated to enroll up to 500 students.
In December 2011, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and the North Chicago Community Unit School District 187 district announced [3] that three companies submitted applications to develop the charter school.
The LEARN network presented its proposal at a public meeting February 2, 2012 and the district is required to decide by March 6, 2012 whether to proceed with the project, according to Jennifer Saba, charter school specialist and legal adviser to the counsel for ISBE. The panel that reviewed the proposals included state and district school officials, as well as members of the local community.
