14 Charter Schools Named 2012 National Blue Ribbon Schools Winners

At least 14 charter schools are among the U.S. Department of Education 2012 National Blue Ribbon Schools winners, according to a list released by the Department.

Charter schools currently on the list include the following:

  • Summit Middle Charter School of Boulder, Colorado
  • City on a Hill Charter Public School of Roxbury, Massachusetts
  • Albany Community Charter School of Albany, New York
  • Bronx Charter School for Excellence of New York, New York
  • Success Academy Harlem 1 of New York, New York
  • Infinity Charter School of Penbrook, Pennsylvania
  • Tongass School of Arts and Sciences of Ketchikan, Alaska
  • Challenger Basic School of Gilbert, Arizona
  • Team Academy of Waseca, Minnesota
  • KIPP Reach College Preparatory School of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
  • Horizon Science Academy Columbus High School, Ohio
  • Project Chrysalis Middle School of Houston, Texas
  • East Early College High School of Houston, Texas
  • Imagine Charter School of Weston, Florida

The award honors public and private elementary, middle, and high schools "where students perform at very high levels or where significant improvements are being made in students' levels of achievement," according to the department's September 7, 2012, announcement.

The Department also recognized seven Blue Ribbon School principals as Terrel H. Bell Award winners, including Tracy McDaniel of KIPP Reach College Preparatory School. The award is named after the former Secretary of Education and recognizes “exceptional leaders who overcome challenging circumstances and maintain committed to providing an excellent education for every student.”
