Two charter schools in Washington, D.C., have been recommended to occupy space at Army facilities that are expected to be turned over to the control of the city as part of the military’s program to realign its bases and close surplus facilities.

The National Charter School Resource Center (Resource Center) will initiate on February 22, 2012 a series of webinars to help provide the charter school community with the tools and knowledge needed to effectively serve English language learners.

“As the population of English language learners (ELLs) grows, charter schools face an increasing challenge to help ELLs improve their English proficiency and meet the same high standards for academic achievement expected of all students,” said Kelly Sparks, Director of the Resource Center.

A panel has recommended that a Chicago, Illinois, charter school network be chosen to develop a K-8 charter school proposed for a site on Naval Station Great Lakes.

LEARN Charter School Network, which operates five charter elementary schools in Chicago communities, was recommended to develop the school that is anticipated to enroll up to 500 students.
