Shuttered Public Schools: The Struggle to Bring Old Buildings New Life

This 2013 report from the PEW Charitable Trusts focuses on the use of closed public school district buildings in 12 cities. The report notes that charter schools have occupied 42 percent of the surplus buildings in the cities since 2005 and that more than 300 unused sites remain.

Charter School Exemplary Collaboration Grants Awarded for Projects Totaling $1.2 Million

Seven grants totaling more than $1.2 million have been awarded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Charter Schools Program to support collaboration amoung public charter schools, traditional public schools, and school districts.

Walton Family Foundation Public Charter Startup Grant Program

The Walton Family Foundation

The Walton Family Foundation provides up to $250,000 in start-up funds for organizations and founders that can prove that they have the capacity to dramatically raise the level of academic performance in targeted communities. The grant program provides financial support before, during, and up to one year into operation after the initial authorization process.

Phase I – Pre-Authorization grants are available to school developers in amounts up to $30,000 and 15 months before filing a charter application.
